3. Brahmanand Swami. A Jocular Born Poet
  Samvat Year 1828-1888 (1772-1832 AD)

Brahmanand Swami was born in Khan village near mountain Abu in Rajasthan on auspicious Vasant Panchami day (Spring Festival) in Vikram Samvat 1828. He was born in Charan - Barot caste, Shambhudan Barot being his father and Laluba Charan as his mother and his childhood name was Ladudan Barot. Right from young days he exhibited the poetic power and flowering of literary genius, which belonged to his ancestors in the family line. He was very proficient in composing Duha (verses) Chhand (rhymes) devotional songs etc. As desired by Shri Hari there used to be a miracle in the kitchen of his house viz. the meals (food items) cooked in the morning remained in the same quantity till evening in spite of using and consuming it as per requirement. When he was fifteen he happened to accompany his father to Udaipur Royal Palace to attend a marriage ceremony. Considering his poetic talent the king advised his father to send Ladudan to Kutch to study the art of prosody. The king promised, “If he completes the study I will appoint him the head of fifteen villages.”
So he studied Prosody for 8 years at Kutch-Bhuj residential school. The Bhuj royal court paid him honours for his proficiency in poetic talent and eloquence. Great kings invited Ladudan to become royal poet in their courts, as his poetic talent attracted them. He spread his fame as a talented poet in Jodhpur, Jaipur and towns of Saurashtra. His entire body was covered with medals, prizes and ornaments received as gifts from the rich and royal personalities, so much so that his body looked gold-studded. He had received honours from Muslim Royalty for his excellence in Charani literature.

Vajesinh Darbar, the king of Bhavnagar appreciating the poetic powers of Ladudan honored him with valuable gifts. A goldsmith devotee came there for the preparation of ornaments for Ladudanji. He had discussion with goldsmith about Godhead of Shreeji Maharaj. Ladudanji made up his mind to go Gadhada and test Sahajanand Swami who had become famous as the incarnation of God. Seeing Lord Swaminarayan in Gadhada his soul merged in radiance and he experienced divine rapture in the body, which was tortured by the evil effect of passion, greed, pride, jealousy etc. After having Darshan of Shri Hari, he became the disciple of Lord Swaminarayan in Vikram Samvat 1860. Renouncing the family life out of sense of detachment he surrendered himself in the service of Shri Hari. Offering him Bhagawati Diksha at Kariyani Shri Hari blessed him with the name 'Shree Rangdas'.

When Shri Hari consecrated the saints as Paramhansas, considering Shree Rangadasa's acute contemplation in Brahman temptative attractions. He gave him a new name Brahmanandji. The delight in all other things became subordinate to the delight in Brahman. His relatives put forward many attractions to take him back into worldly life, to that poet Brahmanand responded by a piece of verse " Real is the relation with Hari, the rest is temporary and weak."

After entering Holy Fellowship he became popular for his many devotional compositions. He moved through villages for the spread of true religion. There came a proposal from Sir Sayajirao-II of Vadodara to gift him a village giving annuity of Rs.25, 000/- per annum. But Brahmanand Swami giving importance to the service of the King of Universe refused the offer from the king of Vadodara. No other saint was so practical and brave in devotion as Brahmanandji. Under the instruction from Lord Swaminarayan, Brahmanandji instead of one crested temple got constructed nine-top-crested grand temple in Vadtal, which is the supreme pilgrimage spot of Swaminarayan Fellowship. Thousands and lacs of people today avail the sacred Darshan of the sculptural art of Brahmanand Swami who himself moved the lime-crushing wheel with his own hand to convey the value of devotional labour. This saint occupied central position in the saint-circle of Shri Hari was proficient in art and also in spreading mirth and laughter.
He rendered outstanding service of making Shriji laugh in the moments of gloom. He approached the Nawab, the then Muslim ruler of Junagadh, impressed him by his poetic powers. Introducing Lord Swaminarayan as an incarnation and having pleased the Nawab to the extent that he offered plot of land for the construction of the temple. Such excellent was the eloquence of Brahmanand Swami. Then Shriji insisted Brahmanand Swami to prepare a temple in Muli, Surendranagar district and he finished the same with equal devotion. Following the instructions of Lord Swaminarayan Brahmanand Swami erected three magnificent world famous temples, which make Gujarat and India proud for the beauty of architecture. Also as an eminent poet he composed about 9000 devotional songs, which are popular as Brahmanand Kavya, and he also wrote eleven religious volumes in prose. Brahmanand Swami was such a saint who wrote prose and verse, devotional lyrics and songs, who made monumental temples using perishable body to create imperishable objects. He left this world for eternal abode Akshardham in Muli on 10th of bright half of Jyesth month in V.S.1888.
